The Barnabas Team

An Invitation

What do you know about Barnabas in the Bible?  Probably not loads - he gets a bit lost in the shadow of some of the ‘heroes’ of the New Testament, like Peter, and Paul.  But if you take a closer look, you’ll see that Barnabas, the ‘son of encouragement’ was a crucial figure in launching much of the mission and church planting that we read about in Acts.

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.  Acts 13:1-2

Do you want to get serious about being a disciple of Jesus?  Are you feeling stirred up to make disciples, to bring people closer to Jesus?  Is God nudging you to chase after him whole-heartedly?  Are you trying to work out what it is that God has made you for - what your part in the big picture of God’s Kingdom looks like?

Yes?  Well then....

Join the Barnabas Team!

The Barnabas Team is a ten month journey in mission and discipleship.  You’ll be part of a team of young adults who are passionate about becoming the missional leaders that God created them to be.

As you immerse yourself in the life of our family and community, you’ll discover more of who God has made you to be; and you’ll grow, and learn, and experience more of what it means to be a disciple - a follower of Jesus.  You’ll be encouraged and challenged, blessed and stretched, trained and formed as a missional leader and a disciple-maker.

You’ll discover more and more that Jesus loves you - just as you are.  And you’ll discover that he loves you too much to leave you that way!  He’d give anything to help you become more and more like him...

And you’ll discover that God didn’t mess up when he made you.  He made you to play a unique part in his amazing plans and purposes for this world - to renew and redeem everything - and make it brilliant again!!

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.  Matt 4:19-20

Reflections from Kim and Humphrey

Watch this video to listen to Kim and Humphrey talking about their experiences of the Barnabas Team in 2013:

Sounds great, tell me more...

The basic pattern for the Barnabas Team is that you divide up your week into thirds:

  • You spend about 1/3 of your time working a part-time job so you can buy food, pay your phone bill, buy Andy coffee :) and all that lovely stuff.

  • You spend about 1/3 of your time learning, studying, reflecting, journalling, praying and preparing for the hands-on ministry you’re involved in.

  • You spend about 1/3 of your time engaged in hands-on mission and ministry.

  • And you have a day off every week!  A whole one, you know... 24 hours!!

We’ll work with you individually to customise how this would all work out for you in practice.  There’s lots of space for flexibility depending on your own circumstances.

What do I need to do

At the same time there are a few non-negotiables - things which are crucial to the Barnabas Team being as fruitful as possible:

  • You need to stick with it.

    • Following Jesus is hard sometimes.  You need to be willing to persevere and stick with the journey, even when the going gets tough.

  • You need to be teachable.

    • A disciple is a learner - that’s what the word means.  To get the most out of the Barnabas Team we all need to be open and willing to God teaching us and moulding us.  And it’s not always comfortable!

  • You need to be committed to the Barney’s / Imagine Network family

    • One of the strengths of the Barnabas Team is that we share our lives together.  It’s hard to do this if we’re too busy doing to many things and part of too many communities and congregations.  For this reason, you need to be committed to the Barney’s / Imagine Network family, and to investing yourself in relationships there.  (This might well mean you need to drop some of your existing commitments to avoid being over-committed)

What do the Barnabas Team leaders need to do

The Barnabas Team leaders are committed to investing in you, supporting you and challenging you in the best ways we know how.

We are committed to following Jesus ourselves, in every area of our lives, and doing all we can to live lives which are worthy of imitation.  We’re committed to continuing to grow and learn and be disciples ourselves.  We’re not perfect, there’s loads we don’t know, but we’re committed to humility, to prayer and to servant leadership - and we’re committed to you becoming the whole, whole-hearted disciple and leader that God created you to be.

Next steps

Even if you’re just a little bit interested in joining the Barnabas Team in 2014, then it would be great to hear from you now.

Get in touch with Andy at Barney’s and we can start chatting about what that could look like for you.  That’s the first step!

Once we’ve sat down and had a good chat together,  you can decide if you do want to go ahead and apply to join the team.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt 28:18-20
